The business case for employee engagement is extremely compelling. Just taking the business travel component alone, CloudApps' customers have achieved significant savings; with a typical return on investment of less than 4 months.

By aligning and engaging their employees, the results from one of CloudApps’ customers in the hi-tech industry with over 5,000 employees, who spend $22m on T&E, of which $17m is on flights and the balance on taxis and car mileage, saw the following savings:

• 7% reduction in air travel costs
• 27% reduction in taxi usage
• 15% reduction in mileage claims
• The recovery of over 27,000 hours (3,375 man days) per year that would otherwise have been lost traveling; hence increasing employee productivity

On average the results saw a reduction in annual travel expense costs of 9%.

During the same period of time a study was performed on a control group of non-participating employees, which saw an increase to their travel expense costs by 2.1%

On top of these direct cost savings, the employee engagement program was seen to have a positive effect on both talent attraction and retention, as employees saw near-hand that the company was taking sustainability seriously.

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS TO EMPLOYEES

To highlight the increasing importance placed upon sustainability at the workplace, CloudApps recently conducted a survey that canvassed employees for their views on the importance to them of sustainability in the workplace.

Almost all (94%) of participants rated participation in activities to improve their companies’ sustainability as either “very important” or “important” to them. But 42% said they had not participated in a single sustainability project in the preceding 12 months

Almost all (97%) regularly see opportunities to reduce waste and consumption of natural resources, with half of the respondents stating that they see such opportunities every day. Yet nearly 1/3’rd of respondents are never asked to contribute their ideas

Approximately 1/3’rd of employees would consider leaving if they believed their organisation was not acting sustainably
