Verdantix CASE STUDY: M&S Brand Benefits From Its Climate Change Plan

This is a complimentary case study from Verdantix, the independent climate change business research firm. The case study is one in a series of Verdantix reports that analyze the business benefits of corporate climate change plans. In January 2007 the CEO of Marks & Spencer announced a 100 point eco-plan dubbed “Plan A”. In the area of climate change, the plan covers energy and fuel efficiency targets, consumer outreach, supplier engagement and carbon goals. Brand benefits are the most readily identifiable achievements from the plan for Marks & Spencer. Broad voluntary action by Marks & Spencer positions the firm to shape the debate. A Better Retailing Climate - Progress Report 2009

The British Retail Consortium's A Better Retailing Climate was launched in April 2008, setting out the retail industry’s collective environmental ambitions. Retailers accept their important role in responding to the threats of climate change within their own operations and by supporting their suppliers and customers to reduce their carbon emissions. The five climate goals in A Better Retailing Climate reflect this wide impact.

This report provides an update on progress between their base year, 2005, and 2008, examining sector progress against quantitative targets, and using selected case studies to demonstrate progress in other areas.
