New report on environmental and economic effects of the Copenhagen pledges

The Federal Environment Agency (UBA) of Germany has just released an interim report about environmental and economic effects of the Copenhagen pledges and more ambitious emission reduction targets.

This report explores the environmental and economic effects of the pledges submitted by industrialized and major developing countries for 2020 under the Copenhagen Accord as quantifiable emission reductions or as NAMAs.

The emission reduction targets of the world’s major CO2 emitters under the Copenhagen Accord are not yet sufficient to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. Doing more will not necessarily cost us more, however.

This new study – prepared by Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and Virginia Tech University - shows that economic costs in terms of reduced gross domestic product (GDP) compared to baseline GDP in 2020 are no higher than 0.25 percent, assuming that emission allowances are traded globally. If the EU reduces its emissions by 30 percent (instead of by 20 percent) by 2020 compared to 1990 levels, the reduction in GDP growth will be marginal.

Full Product Transparency - Avoiding greenwash with the 'Just the Facts' approach

Ramon Arratia, Sustainability Director EMEAI, InterfaceFLOR

There is a growing cynicism about green claims and labels, which is undermining trust in both marketing and sustainable innovations. On the other hand, the data in most CR reports still focuses primarily on performance of the company’s operations. For many companies this focus is mismatched with their true impact, which lies outside their operations in the life-cycle of their products. Full Product Transparency aims at publishing the full environmental impacts of a product in its whole life cycle as well as disclosing all raw materials and components. Learn about Full Product Transparency, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Life Cycle Assessement (LCA) and how to make decisions based on facts rather than just trusting narrow claims or labels.

Better Decisions, Real Value: The Business Case for Sustainability

David Bent, Head of Business Strategies, Forum for the Future

What is the business case for sustainability? How do you get senior decision-makers to understand the commercial reasons for making a company more sustainable? How do you explain to your investors how this will benefit them financially? The Forum for the Future has helped its Foundation Corporate Partners find their business case, and has created a toolkit to help other companies uncover the different business cases for sustainability and communicate them to two key audiences: internal leaders, so the company can make better decisions; and investors, so they understand how this generates real value.

This webinar explores the project's findings so far and introduces the toolkit which aims to provide practical tools to support the valuation of the business case, and is freely available for anyone to use.

securing the benefits of decentralised energy

Tomorrow’s challenge is to extend sustainability strategies beyond simple cost and carbon savings and transform them into a new generation of broader, more interactive assets that deliver energy availability and resilience at optimum performance.

Linked to local energy communities the decentralised energy infrastructure will be developed to meet more than just the individual need. Those who contribute most to the solutions will be positioned to thrive in the future.
