Cutting the Costs of Waste in NHS Construction

This report is the result of collaboration between theNHS Sustainable Development Unit and WRAP. The guidance is aimed at halving the amount of construction waste going to landfill at a time when landfill costs are rising. The report sets out ways that NHS organisations can improve the sustainability of building works being carried out.

Cisco HealthPresence - Bridging the Distance

This case study illustrates how Cisco HealthPresence is enabling patients and carers to bridge the distance in communities too remote from the health centres of urban areas. The technology is used in north east Scotland where, through the internet, it brings a doctor to the patient, complete with stethoscopes, thermometers, and blood pressure monitors. In France, meanwhile, the same technology is letting frail and elderly patients consult with specialists miles away without the stressful and costly ambulance ride through congested Parisian streets.

Barts & the Royal London NHS Trust 2007 carbon footprint

ARUP have undertaken a full consumption-based footprint and intervention study as part of a regional London NHS carbon footprint research project. The first Trust-level study was carried out with Barts and the London NHS Trust (BLT). The aim was to use, develop and test a Trust-level footprint methodology based on the one used to calculate the national and regional footprints, thus ensuring data is fully comparable between national, regional and Trust levels. The study showed that the overall emissions for BLT equate to 4.5% of all NHS London Trusts emissions, 0.9% of NHS England emissions and 21.5 tonnes of CO2 per BLT staff member.
