Sustainable Biofuels

Are biofuels a viable component in a sustainable transport strategy – what is the carbon reduction potential, which biofuel production technologies are sustainable, and what are the economic benefits? How can these benefits be realized while minimizing risks, and what current legislation is affecting the biofuels market?

These are some of the questions which this Working Group may address – it aims to bring together the key players in the biofuels market, both producers and consumers, to create a cross-industry platform for knowledge transfer and discussion on the viability, sustainability and current opportunities of liquid biofuels.

CASE STUDY: Sustainable Flying: Bio-fuels as an Economic and Environmental Salve for the Airline Ind

The aviation industry will need carbon-neutral biofuels as a feasible and desperately needed way to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and cut its greenhouse gas emissions. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), starting from 2012, will put a direct cost on carbon emissions for all flights into or out of Europe.

It is likely only a matter of time before most flights around the world will be similarly taxed. More than just the carbon risks, the airline industry has been battered by unstable jet fuel prices and biofuels offer a potentially more stable (not to mention more sustainable) fuel source.

Biofuels in Aviation: Case Study from Virgin Atlantic

This is a PDF copy of the case study given by Sian Foster of Virgin Atlantic in the webinar presentation held on Thursday 29th October on Biofuels in Aviation: Examples from British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.  Other speaker was Jonathan Counsell, British Airways.

The session aims to give an overview of the current state of biofuels within the aviation industy, and answer questions such as why the aviation industry is interested in biofuels, the experiences from test-flights undertaken, how to sustainably grow and refine the high-quality fuel required and how to overcome the technical challenges presented.
